Fashion runways have been a boiling pot for peculiar fashion outfits that bewilder non-fashion audiences but amaze people in the industry. A spray-on dress, however, may just be something that will tickle anyone's fancy.

At the spring/summer 2023 (SS23) fashion show in France, model Bella Hadid walked into the stage, nearly nude. The purpose of that is for her to have the dress she will showcase sprayed on her by the fashion label, Coperni.

The dress she flawlessly modeled stuck to her like a skin suit. The material that they used is Fabrican, which is a spray-on material that hardens into wearable textiles according to Vogue.

Techs circled around her and sprayed the fabric all over her body until it resembled a fashion-worthy dress.

As mentioned in CNET, Fabrican material acts the way spay foam insulations do, it is liquid inside the can which turns solid the moment it is sprayed. Fabrican is made of polymers and natural or synthetic fibers, and once sprayed onto the body, it clings like a plastic wrap serving as clothing for whoever it was sprayed on.

The material can be removed and turned back into its liquid state, which allows for it to be used again. It was developed by a company of the same name, Fabrican. It was founded by scientist and designer Manel Torres in partnership with Coperni co-founders, Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant.

Meyers told Vogue Business that they will not be making money off of the product. They created it simply to evoke emotion from the audience.

One of the impressive things about the fashion runway system is how they manage to do dress changes so quickly, so the next model can strut on the walkway and exhibit the proud work of a designer.

If you factor in the complexity of the dresses they have to change into and the amount of work to put them on, it just adds to just how impressive and difficult runway model work can be.

The Fabrican is a wild change of pace in the fashion world, part of it is because it eliminates the process of changing backstage, and another is how the dress is applied, which is already a show in itself.

Spectators will watch as the dress is sprayed on, which grants them the chance to witness not just how the dress is made, but how uniquely it was fabricated as well.

According to Fabrican's website, the material is made with non-volatile organic compounds. The spray does not use ozone-depleting substances like they do in hairspray.

Since it compresses the industrial supply chain and has reduced reliance on overseas components, it is more efficient and has a reduced carbon footprint.

Witnessing advancements like this may make you wonder how can be applied in different fields as well. After all, the chainsaw was initially made for the removal of the pelvic bone during childbirth.

If a medical tool can be turned into heavy machinery hardware, then a fashion innovation can be turned into something else. A sprayable non-woven fabric can be part of the future of medicine. Perhaps, it can even be an alternative to gauze or bandages.
